THE REALITIES OF FREELANCING: RESOURCES AND TIPS from the fair museum jobs career summit

The Fair Museum Jobs Careers Summit #FMJSummit took place in November 2020, aimed at people thinking about freelancing in the sector or in the early stages.

Christina from Museum Freelance gave this presentation on "Freelancing in Museums - by the numbers". The session brings the real story of freelancing in the museum and heritage sector to life by sharing insights from the Museum Freelance survey, resources and tips on getting started and surviving as a freelancer in the sector. The session is introduced by Louise McAward-White, Collections Systems Specialist at British Film Institute and Committee Member, Fair Museum Jobs.

And in this presentation, five freelancers talk about their experience in “What’s it like to be a freelancer in museums and heritage?” You’ll find out about the realities of freelancing, managing client relationships, spotting good/bad briefs, networking, setting appropriate day rates and how to look after yourself.

In August 2020 Isabel Churcher, Senior Manager, Museums, Arts Council England (ACE) ran a Zoom session to share tips on applying for ACE’s National Lottery Project Grants funding stream. A separate Zoom information session was also run by Isabel in October 2020 to explain more about ACE’s Developing your Creative Practice fund for museum freelancers.
